The government of Uttar Pradesh has decided to extend benefits from 17 schemes to MGNREGA workers and families who are registered with the Ministry of Labor. According to reports, workers will receive benefits such as boarding, medical facilities and housing assistance, among others.
According to reports, the rural development department has set a target of registering 20 lakh workers working under MGNREGA with the labor department by the end of the current fiscal year.
Yogesh Kumar, MGNREGA Additional Commissioner, said nearly 1.4 crore people worked this year. Kumar said Uttar Pradesh will become a state with maximum employment, as it will soon register more than two million workers for MGNREGA.
“Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath’s initiative to create jobs within MGNREGA is now bearing fruit,” he said.
The Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) is a social security measure which aims to guarantee the “right to work”. This law was adopted in September 2005 under the government of the UPA.
Meanwhile, a PTI report said demand for work under MGNREGA more than doubled this fiscal year due to the COVID-19 lockdown.
