1 dead, 1 injured in the fire of a retirement home

CEBU CITY, Philippines – A man died while a woman was injured in an early afternoon fire that also damaged parts of a building along Junquera Street in downtown Cebu City on Saturday afternoon January 16.

Firefighter 2 Emerson Arceo of the Cebu City Fire Department has confirmed that a man, believed to be in his 50s, died after being trapped on the second floor of the burned-out building.

Arceo also confirmed that a woman suffered minor injuries after fleeing the burning building that served as a retirement home and belonged to one Nenil Ongloyko.

Firefighters are still verifying the identity of deceased and injured victims as of the date of this publication.

They also assessed the damage at 300,000 P.

In the meantime, Arceo said they are still in the process of determining the cause of the fire which erupted at 2:54 p.m., and was brought under control five minutes later or at 2:59 p.m.

The fire was officially declared a fire extinguished from 3:45 p.m. / rcg
